Bobbi Jo Brooks has had an interest in taking photos since a young age, but it was not until college that her interest in photography grew beyond taking snapshots of family and friends. After graduating from Kuyper College with a degree in Bible/Theology and Social Work, she began experimenting with her roommate’s new Nikon SLR and soon invested in one of her own. Three days after the purchase of her camera, Bobbi Jo photographed her first wedding.
Bobbi Jo has had many opportunities to combine her passions for photography and serving God through serving others. Since college, she worked first as a counselor in a residential treatment facility and later as a volunteer with a Romanian nonprofit Christian social service agency. Part of her responsibilities in Romania included teaching life skills at girls’ orphanage and teaching basic photography skills to youth at a community center. In 2004, Bobbi Jo moved from Romania to Decatur, GA where she currently works with Mission to the World, the mission sending agency of the Presbyterian Church in America. In January 2007, she traveled to South India, where she facilitated medical and construction teams serving with Homes of Hope, a tsunami reconstruction project. At the same time, she completed her first photojournalism project which focused on the rebuilding of a tsunami-affected community. (These photos are in the gallery, Waves of Restoration which can be found on the first page of this web site.)
Bobbi Jo’s genuine empathy for her subjects allows her to capture them just as the windows to their souls are opening. Her compositions—even of everyday objects—communicate a deep sense of meaning to her audience. Photography is now both a hobby and a developing passionate second career for Bobbi Jo.
